University of Belgrade - Faculty of Law

Word by the Dean

The University of Belgrade Faculty of Law is entering the 166th year of its foundation, work and development. Whilst sharing the fate of the Serbian people and the modern Serbian state, which has endured a great deal during that time, it has managed, for more than a century and a half, to play the leading role in the development and study of law in the larger part of the Balkan Peninsula. It has produced almost 50,000 law graduates, which have become eminent professionals in various areas of the legal vocation, including the judiciary, various state departments, economy and education. Today, the Faculty of Law is the largest and most prestigious centre for legal education in Serbia, despite the growing number of state and private faculties of law in the country.

Being aware of its role in the development of the legal profession, the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law has modernized its teaching process and curriculum. It is continually investing significant resources into new technologies and the improvement of its study environment, as well as in the growth of its teaching staff, which currently consists of more than one hundred professors and teaching and research assistants. By combining traditional values with the contemporary needs and standards of the European Higher Education Area, the Faculty is strengthening its integrity, recognisability, competitiveness and capacity for future development. By integrating itself into the European academic community, the Faculty seeks to renew its international relations, which had deteriorated throughout the last decade due to the civil wars, as well as to establish new ones. The particular reason for this kind of commitment lies in the fact that young assistants already predominate in its teaching staff (the average age of almost 40 assistants is below 30). Among them, many have already earned degrees from prestigious academic institutions throughout the world.

Serbia is heading towards Europe. The intent of the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law is to be actively involved in the harmonization of Serbian legislation with the EU legislation, in the regulation of our market–oriented, modern and competitive economy and to serve as an important factor in the creation of a democratic state which respects human rights and the values of the international community. The University of Belgrade Faculty of Law would like to see Serbia as a member of the EU. Respecting both national and European values it strongly supports integration of its academic community into the European Higher Education Area, which will enable mobility and integration of its students and academic staff. For these reasons, the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law aspires to provide excellence and competitiveness in legal education and maintain its leading position among both public and private  faculties of law in Serbia and in this part of Europe. Relying on the tradition which had secured its prestigious position, the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law strives to be future-oriented for the welfare of Serbia and the entire academic legal community.
